ONTARIO COLLEGE DIPLOMA

Program #0440X02PWO

Library and Information Technician

This Ontario College Diploma program provides students with the knowledge and skills required to carry out the tasks normally performed in two main functional areas of libraries and information resource centres: technical services and public services. Technical services involve manual and automated operations related to acquiring, processing, and organizing all types of informational materials. Public services involve making information available to the public and conducting research using a variety of print and electronic resources. Theory is reinforced by practice.

Library technicians are service-oriented, meet deadlines easily, and work with minimal supervision.

Students test their knowledge and skills through field placements in schools, public and special libraries, and other information services. Field work is scheduled for three-week periods in Level 03 and Level 04.

Graduates can seek employment in libraries and information resource centres serving universities and colleges, school boards, secondary and elementary schools, regions and municipalities (public libraries), provincial and federal government departments and agencies, industry and business associations, law offices, hospitals, and bookstores. Other opportunities include working with database or Internet applications and conducting research.
