This two-year diploma program prepares students for employment in
a variety of careers in the correctional field. Students are trained
in the legal and theoretical aspects of crime and behaviour, interviewing
and intervention skills for young and adult offenders, and security
measures and techniques. The program includes the study of female
and native offenders, addictions, group dynamics, behaviour management
and the role of victims in the Canadian Justice System.
Classroom studies in second year are enhanced by two seven-week
blocks of field placement in a correctional setting. This
on-the-job training
permits students to make immediate and significant contributions
to the field. Students develop good communication and writing skills.
Emphasis is placed on writing reports, assessments and case management,
as well as client/worker interactions.
Students are normally required to successfully complete the
first year of the program with a grade point average of
2.0 before being
permitted to register for Field Placement I, COR1930, in level
three.
