ENV5000 - The Environment
Course Description:
This course is an introduction to current environmental issues. It focuses on the underlying ideas, values, and beliefs that have contributed to many of the current environmental crises we face today. We are often aware of issues such as global warming and pollution, but remain unaware of the reasons why such issues exist of have resulted from human behaviors and beliefs. From a theoretical perspective this course will examine the relationship between humans and the natural world in its various forms including culture, religion, politics, economics and activism. Students will engage with the readings and lecture materials in order to develop an understanding and critical awareness of the theories that have been developed in the attempt to understand the nature and depth of our current environmental crisis. Gaining knowledge of how humans understand and value nature and direct their actions accordingly will be the overall goal of this course.
