Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the principles and technologies of fibre optic communications systems. Topics include detail coverage of SONET/SDH networks including framing and overhead, multiplexing levels, performance monitoring, SONET protection switching and ring architectures. Other topics include fibre transmission technologies, attenuation and dispersion, other transmission issues and dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM).

Prerequisites: CST6500 Internetworking Fundamentals
