Job Description  
Reporting to the Manager of Counselling and Aboriginal Services, members of the Counselling Services team support the mental health and wellness, career development, and academic performance of the students of Algonquin College. This role includes working with college and community partners to assess and intervene in cases where a student is experiencing some manner of urgent mental health distress. Counsellors are expected to employ empirically validated techniques and professional standards of practice in the execution of all aspects of their role. Counsellors provide services to students through individual sessions, group workshops, and the creation of information resources. Counsellors also provide consultation and training services to the staff and student leaders of the college community to extend the reach and impact of Counselling Services.

Required Qualifications  
  • Masters degree in Counselling Psychology, Educational Counselling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or closely related field;
  • Registered or eligible for registration with an Ontario College approved to engage in the act of psychotherapy under the Psychotherapy Act, 2007;
  • Within the past 5 years, have completed a minimum of 1,600 hours (post-masters) of relevant counselling services;
  • Demonstrated training and experience of suicide risk assessment and mental health crisis intervention;
  • Demonstrated experience completing effective referrals to community services;
  • Demonstrated experience as a part of an interdisciplinary team;
  • Demonstrated experience effectively providing services to individuals representing a variety of cultures;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current counselling theory and practices;
  • Demonstrated computer skills; including the proficient use of an electronic client record system;
  • Experience in a post-secondary institution is an asset;
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, including the ability to complete group presentations;
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
