Job Description  
Reporting to the Manager of Counselling and Aboriginal Services, members of the Counselling Services team support the mental health and wellness, career development, and academic performance of the students of Algonquin College. This role includes working with college and community partners to assess and intervene in cases where a student is experiencing some manner of urgent mental health distress. Counsellors are expected to employ empirically validated techniques and professional standards of practice in the execution of all aspects of their role. Counsellors provide services to students through individual sessions, group workshops, and the creation of information resources. Counsellors also provide consultation and training services to the staff and student leaders of the college community to extend the reach and impact of Counselling Services.

Required Qualifications  
  • Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, Educational Counselling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or closely related field
  • Minimum of 1,600 hours relevant client contact experience (post-masters)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of suicide risk assessment and mental health crisis intervention
  • Demonstrated ability to complete effective referrals to community services
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated competence in effectively providing services to individuals representing a variety of cultures
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current counselling theory and practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the use of current career assessment instruments
  • Demonstrated computer skills; including the proficient use of an electronic client record system
  • Eligible for membership with a relevant professional association
  • Experience in a post-secondary institution, would be considered an asset
  • Flexible work schedule; including the ability to work some evenings and weekends
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, including the ability to complete group presentations
  • Flexibility in work schedule; including the ability to work some evenings and weekends
