Job Description  

Reporting to the Acting Manager, Centre for Students with Disabilities (CSD), the Disabilities Counsellor is responsible for facilitating the accommodation process for students with a range of disabilities. The incumbent will provide counselling and advocacy services to support academic success and student retention.

The successful candidate will:

  • Collect and evaluate documentation to establish eligibility for support services.
  • Interview, advise and provide disability-related counselling and work with students to develop strategies to normalize situations of both an academic and socio-emotional nature.
  • In consultation with students, develop and implement individualized student plans to ensure College policies and practices are consistent with the Ontario Human Rights Code and other relevant legislation.
  • Maintain confidential records of accommodation requests, action taken and effectiveness of the accommodations and supports required.
  • Provide students with assistance in developing skills and strategies in writing, reading, thinking as well as instruction in time management, organizational management, exam preparation and self-advocacy.
  • Liaise appropriately with faculty to ensure supports and services are available in the classroom while at the same time ensuring the confidentiality needs of the student are taken into consideration.
  • Advocate within the College and with external agencies for resources, rights, and responsibilities concerning persons with disabilities.
  • Present disability education sessions for campus departments.
  • Participate in departmental projects and college meetings

Required Qualifications  
  • Master’s degree in a discipline relevant to disability issues (Psychology, Disability Studies, Counselling, Social Work, Education Psychology).
  • Minimum two years of current, directly-related counselling experience in working with persons with disabilities at a post-secondary institution.
  • Excellent analytical, counselling, clinical interviewing, reasoning, and problem-solving skills to assess documentation, evaluate student needs, recommend and develop accommodation plans and evaluate service delivery.
  • Direct experience counselling students with visual impairments at the post-secondary level, including knowledge of accommodations, assistive technology, and requirements for accessible documents.
  • Demonstrated counselling experience with students who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Vision Loss, Acquired Brain Injury, Learning Disabilities and Psychiatric Disabilities.
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code, the AODA and other relevant legislation in the post-secondary context.
  • Knowledge of adult education theory and practice.
  • Experience with confidential electronic notetaking and database systems, as well as Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, leadership, customer service and creative thinking skills.
  • Enthusiastic team player with a demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently and display a high degree of initiative.
  • Flexibility in the work schedule; including the ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned.
