Job Description  

Reporting to the Manager, Pension and Benefits, the Disability Management Coordinator manages the entire disability management process, during absence and reintegration of employees into the workplace following absence from either occupational or non-occupational illness or injury. In partnership with the HR team members, the Disability Management Coordinator provides advice and coaches management on all issues related to occupational and non-occupational disability claims, absence management strategies and safe and early return to work programs. The Disability Coordinator monitors and tracks key trends related to Long Term Disability (LTD) and WSIB absences and identifies opportunities to effectively support management in the development of absence prevention/early intervention strategies and successful return to work action-plans.

The Disability Management Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating and managing all activities related to the employee’s application for Long Term Disability Benefits, and all activities/interventions related to short term disability management functions leading to the safe and early return to work for all employees. The Disability Management Coordinator collaborates with employees, supervisors, union representatives, managers, Labour Relations, the medical community and insurance carrier with respect to return to work and accommodation issues; provides case summaries as required; assists in the implementation and delivery of occupational health services and programs; and provides disability management education/training to all staff levels at Algonquin College.

An in depth knowledge of the College policies, directives and Provincial legislation regarding Accommodation, Human Rights and Workplace Safety and Insurance Act is required. Imperative to the position is sensitivity, confidentiality, advocacy and problem resolution skills as the incumbent is called upon to provide counseling, referrals and information to employees in stressful circumstances.

Required Qualifications  
  • Minimum of a three (3) year Diploma/Degree in a health related field such as nursing, disability management, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, vocational rehabilitation or a relevant, related field; including some academic training in Disability Case Management and/or Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) designation.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in Disability Case Management; including experience working in a unionized work environment.
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislative such as the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, the Employment Standards Act.
  • Demonstrated experience in interpreting collective agreements and corporate policies.
  • Extensive knowledge of best practices in Disability Management and Early and Safe Return to Work.
  • Strong understanding of medical conditions, duration of recovery guidelines and resulting work restrictions.
  • Client focused, results oriented, and viewed as a trusted advisor.
  • Must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and its performance.
  • Exercise discretion in dealing with sensitive and/or confidential issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently, as well as in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills combined with excellent judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work in a highly confidential manner with all work related contacts and exercise a high degree of tact and discretion.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
